Getting Started with FE

So I've been lurking this website and the forums for a couple years now. Quite often. I've always found the idea of this very intriguing but never pulled the trigger. Anyway, I was thinking about taking a shot at it. I've read the best bet starting out is to focus in one area and it seems that people say FE is doable part-time. My question is how do I get started? I want to be independent, but I'm not entirely sure how to go about getting contracts with companies to sell their products. Do I just contact them and ask them? Would they even let someone just getting started do that? Any i
