FE Pros: What's the Best Approach for DM Leads

Wanting opinions from successful FE pros on what the best approach is for direct mail leads. Do you call for appointments or just show up at their door. It seems like there are two mind-sets here. Some pros like Alan Benedict say to never call because that is just a chance for them to say no and it just adds a whole extra step. Others say to always call first. Opinions please.
