Qualifying Direct Mail Leads

It has been suggested that I door knock all of my DM leads as well as my B leads. To me it seems like a lot of wheel spinning because most of the time no one is home or if they are home they want to schedule an appointment. Does anyone have success calling and setting appointments? If so can you comment on your process?
